Not long ago, if you had a dispute with someone, the only place to resolve it was court or use “arbitration.” Now, there is another increasingly used procedure to resolve disputes outside of court. It is called “mediation.” In mediation, the parties meet with a neutral third person called a mediator. The mediator does not make a binding decision, but rather helps the parties reach an acceptable solution to the dispute. Mediation has several advantages over going to court. It is usually faster and less expensive than going to court. It is simpler because you do not have to use the court’s complicated procedures. Also, mediation offers much more privacy than court. Many types of disputes can be resolved by mediation, including family law disputes, business disputes and personal injury claims. If you have a dispute with some, you should consult your lawyer about the advantages and disadvantages of trying to resolve it through mediation.
